1 1/2 pounds steak or stew meat, cut into 1” cubes
2 tablespoons shortening or vegetable oil
1 large onion
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup water
2 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce
1 medium carrot, finely diced
1 stalk celery, finely diced
1 can (8 oz.) mushroom slices

Brown meat in 2 tablespoons shortening or vegetable oil in Dutch oven or large frying pan. Add onion and sauté until transparent yellow. Stir in all remaining ingredients, except mushrooms.
Bring to a boil; cover, and reduce heat to simmer. Simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Add mushrooms and heat through. Serve with rice or noodles.
