3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
White sugar for rolling

Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and molasses. Sift all dry ingredients and add to the wet ingredients. Chill.

Roll into balls. Roll in white sugar. Flatten the dough with a glass on a prepared cookie sheet (parchment or non-stick mat).

Bake for 10 minutes at 350°F.
