Beat margarine or butter and 1 cup sugar in large bowl with mixer at low speed until creamy. Add molasses and egg, beating until well blended.
Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, cloves and ginger in medium bowl. Add to molasses mixture; mix well. Cover and refrigerate.
Form dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in sugar; place on greased cookie sheets about 2 inches apart. Lightly sprinkle dough with sugar. Bake at 375°F for 6 to 8 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand 1 minute. Remove cookies to wire rack to coo l.
