Melt butter in medium saucepan on low heat.

Add flour and salt; mix well. Cook 2 min. or until bubbly, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk.

Bring to boil on medium heat, stirring constantly; cook and stir 2 min. or until thickened.

Prepare recipe as directed. Remove from heat. Add 1 pkg. (8 oz.) KRAFT Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese or 2 cups of your favorite blend of KRAFT Shredded Cheeses; stir until melted. Or for a creamier cheese sauce, substitute 1/4 lb. (4 oz.) cubed VELVEETA® for 1 cup of the shredded cheese; cook on medium-low heat until completely melted, stirring constantly.
